Présentation de Gigi BRYERSSettled in Switzerland at the age of 4 and widely travelled thereafter, she now lives between two extremes – a cabin on an alpenfield in the Swiss Alps and a house on the American gulf coast.
Démarche artistique de Gigi BRYERSThanks to the support of patrons, her work has developed independently of market pressures and, therefore, free of trends.
1 am as fascinated by color, line, and composition on a flat surface as 1 am by the more tactile act of shaping a sculpture in a three-dimensional space, so my work has evolved toward a joining of the two.
It has nothing to do with collages, -as in taking a pre-fabricated object and affixing it to a surface=instead, the three-dimensional elements of my paintings are an integral part of them-Conceived as a sculpture in materials such as linen or wood-paste, they are solidly worked into the canvas, in some cases re-enforced with steel armatures riveted to the stretchers.
When the opportunity to sculpt wood presented itself, I grabbed it, -but this also made me reconsider drawing on a flat surface again: drawing has always been relegated to a secondary place, as if it is lack of color excluded it from having as much of a soul (presence) as a painting.
The main trigger of the process, however, has always been an event, a feeling, a moment that imposes itself and demands to be remembered through the arousal of precise feelings in others, -for which my work must be clearly figurative. A reflection on the daily violence of our world, brought to us by the media or witnessed in person, as well as a mirror on absurdities, my subjects are cross-cultural and cross-species : 1 explore the relationship between animals, -almost always present in my paintings- and humans, breaking the "us-them" barrier by showing a scene as lived by all these within it, -and though the act of humans versus humans, it is our own behavior I question not always too seriously-. Some are peaceful, some much less so. |
